RedM script subscriptions vs buying outright: which one costs your server less

RedM script stores now sell two ways: pay once and own a script, or pay monthly and use a whole catalogue. Neither is a trick, and neither is always cheaper. The answer depends on how many scripts you would actually run, for how long, and what happens to your server on the day you stop paying. This guide does the maths with the live prices from this store and says plainly when buying outright is the better deal.

What you are actually paying for

Buying outright gets you one script, permanently, on the Cfx.re account you checked out with. On this store a one-time purchase includes updates. If you stop playing for six months and come back, the script is still yours.

A subscription gets you the right to run a set of scripts while you keep paying. All Access is $12.99 a month for every Poggy script, every release that comes out while you are subscribed, and Server Controller. When the subscription lapses or is cancelled, access to all of it ends. That is the whole trade: a lower cost to start, in exchange for not owning anything.

The break-even maths

A subscription wins until the money you have paid in passes the price of the scripts you would have bought. Two worked examples with today's prices:

You wantBuy outrightAll AccessSubscription stops being cheaper after
An economy: Poggy Markets ($99) and Auction House ($29.99)$128.99 once$12.99 a monthAbout 10 months
Everything: all 12 paid scripts$372.90 once$12.99 a monthAbout 28 months

Read the table the other way round too. If you would run only two scripts and expect the server to exist in a year, buying those two is cheaper. If you are still working out what your server needs, or you want most of a catalogue, the subscription costs a fraction of the outright price for as long as it takes you to decide.

A few scripts also have a monthly option of their own: Server Controller ($2.99 a month), Witnesses ($6.99 a month), Poggy's Supply Drops ($3.99 a month). That suits a server that wants one system for a season. Add up the ones you would take before choosing: once they pass the price of All Access, the subscription to everything is the better deal.

When a subscription is the better deal

  • A new server. You do not know yet which systems your players will use. A month or two of everything tells you, for less than one script.
  • A server that wants most of the catalogue. Past three or four paid scripts, the outright total is years of subscription.
  • A server that changes. Seasons, events and experiments. Try a script for a weekend event without buying it.
  • New releases. Scripts released while you are subscribed are included, with no extra checkout.

When buying outright is the better deal

  • A settled server running two or three scripts. Past the break-even month you are paying for scripts you do not use.
  • Anything your players' data depends on. If a shop system holds months of player ledgers and stock, own it. A lapsed card should not be able to close every shop on the server.
  • A server that may go quiet. Owned scripts wait for you. A subscription does not.

You can do both: subscribe while building, then buy outright the two or three systems that became core, and cancel. Nothing stops you, and your configs and database tables stay where they are.

Updates, either way

How updates arrive matters more than how you paid. An update you have to re-download from the Cfx portal, unzip and merge into your config by hand is an update most servers skip. Every Poggy script, bought or subscribed, runs on the free Poggy Core (Free), which checks a public update feed, installs new versions, merges your config so your values are kept, and backs up what it replaced. How to update RedM scripts covers both the manual routine and the automatic one.

Licences and accounts

Both kinds of purchase are tied to your Cfx.re account through Tebex, not to a Discord account. You sign in to the store with Cfx.re at checkout, and the escrowed build is issued to that account. Buy with the account that owns your server key, or the build will refuse to load; Cfx escrow explained has the details and the fix.

Five questions before you choose

  1. How many paid scripts would I run on day one, and in six months?
  2. Which of them hold player data I could not rebuild?
  3. Will this server exist in a year?
  4. Do owned scripts on this store get updates, and how do they arrive?
  5. If I cancel, what stops working, and what stays in my database?

If the answers are "two", "both", "yes", "yes, automatically" and "the scripts stop, the data stays", buy the two. Otherwise start with the subscription, and buy outright whatever turns out to be essential.

Questions this guide answers

Do I keep the scripts if I cancel a RedM script subscription?

No. Access to every script in a subscription ends when it lapses or is cancelled. A script bought outright is yours for good, with updates included, so buy outright anything your server cannot run without.

Is a subscription cheaper than buying RedM scripts?

For the first months, almost always. It stops being cheaper once the monthly total passes what the scripts you actually run would cost outright. For two mid-priced scripts that is well under a year; for a whole catalogue it is years.

Do scripts bought outright still get updates?

Poggy scripts do. A one-time purchase includes updates, and poggy_core installs them automatically on the server, merging your config. Check what any other store promises before you buy; some sell a version, not a product.

What account is a RedM script licence tied to?

Your Cfx.re account, through Tebex. You sign in to the Tebex store with Cfx.re at checkout and the escrowed build is issued to that account, so buy with the account that owns your server key. Discord is only one way of logging in to some Tebex stores.
