Bounty Hunter

When the law can't reach every corner of the frontier, bounty hunters make sure escaped outlaws never get to rest easy. Track, capture, and collect — alive or dead.

📖 Overview

Bounty hunting sits at the intersection of law, violence, and commerce. Any citizen — regardless of background — can take up bounty hunting. All you need is the nerve to track dangerous individuals, the firepower to subdue them, and the professionalism to bring them to justice (or close enough).

Bounties are placed on players and NPCs by law enforcement officers with the authority to issue them. The reward is posted publicly on bounty boards in towns across the territory. Any hunter who successfully captures or kills the target and turns them in collects the full bounty amount.

Not a License to Kill Anyone

Bounty hunters operate under the law, not above it. You may only use force against individuals with active, verified bounties. Assaulting, kidnapping, or harming uninvolved citizens while claiming to be a bounty hunter is a criminal offense under the Rosewood Ridge Penal Code.

📌 Bounty Boards

Bounty boards are physical notice boards posted in the major towns across the territory. Walk up to a board and interact to see the full list of active bounties — including the target's name, the posted reward, whether they're wanted alive or dead, and the expiry date.

How Bounties Are Set

Only authorised law enforcement officers with sufficient rank can issue bounties on players. This prevents the system from being abused to harass innocent citizens.

  • The issuing officer specifies the reward amount (between $1 and $10,000), jail time if brought in alive, and an expiry period (up to 30 days).
  • Bounties are linked to the target's in-character identity — not their out-of-character username.
  • A cancelled or expired bounty removes the target from the board and nullifies any reward claims.
The Year is 1901

All bounty records and wanted posters are displayed with the correct in-character year — 125 years before the real-world date. This keeps immersion consistent on the boards.

🤠 Capturing a Target

  1. Check the board and accept a target

Review the active bounties. Note the reward, the preferred delivery condition (alive or dead), and any known last location. Plan your hunt accordingly.

  2. Track the target

Hunt them down using your knowledge of the territory, player contacts, or in-character investigative RP. The server does not hand you a GPS marker for player bounties — you have to find them.

  3. Subdue and restrain

For a live capture, you must subdue the target (bleed them out, use knockout methods, or get them to surrender through RP). Restrain them with rope or handcuffs before transport.

  4. Transport to the nearest law office

Bring your captive to the turn-in point at the nearest jail or lawman station. Interact with the designated NPC or officer to process the bounty and receive your payment.

💀 Alive vs. Dead

Most bounties pay more for a live capture. Bringing a target in dead is valid, but results in a penalty on the reward:

Delivery ConditionPayoutNotes
AliveFull reward amountPreferred for trials and IC justice
Dead70% of reward (30% penalty)Still valid — outlaws resist capture
Alive Means More RP (and Money)

A live capture creates a whole chain of RP: arrest processing, a potential trial with lawyers and judges, and possible jailbreak attempts. It's more exciting and more lucrative than a simple kill-and-turn-in.

🤖 NPC Bounties

Not all bounties are on players. The territory also has scripted NPC bounty missions activated periodically. These offer a controlled, instanced hunt against armed outlaw NPCs for those who want the experience without the player-vs-player element.

  • NPC bounty missions are triggered from the bounty board or via the handling lawman's commands.
  • NPC targets are dangerous — armed, aggressive, and sometimes travel in groups. Come prepared.
  • Rewards from NPC bounties are fixed and do not have the alive/dead differential.

💡 Tips & Survival

  • Never hunt alone for high-value player bounties. Outlaws with large rewards are usually capable fighters with allies willing to help them escape.
  • Gather intelligence before you ride out. Ask around in character — other players, bartenders, and merchants may have seen the target recently.
  • Carry rope and/or handcuffs at all times — you can't transport a live target without restraints.
  • Keep a doctor's contact handy. Bounty hunting is dangerous and field injuries are common.
  • Know the law: bounty hunting doesn't grant immunity from the Penal Code. If you kill a bystander in pursuit of a target, you may face charges yourself.
Work With Lawmen, Not Against Them

Bounty hunters and law enforcement often pursue the same targets. Coordinate rather than compete — a lawman can provide backup, and sharing information builds IC relationships that benefit both sides.
