📖 Overview

Fishing is one of the most accessible and relaxing ways to earn money in Rosewood Ridge. Whether you're sitting quietly on the banks of the Dakota River or battling a Muskie in the depths of Flat Iron Lake, the fishing system offers a rich, skill-based experience with real progression.

The waters of the frontier host a wide variety of fish across 4 difficulty tiers, found in over 25 unique water zones. Fish value and catch difficulty scale together — small panfish are easy money for beginners, while trophy species test even veteran anglers. Many species are time-dependent and only bite at certain hours. Pick up a Fishing Journal to start tracking your discoveries.

No license or whitelist is required. All you need is a Fishing Rod (or the upgraded Pro Fishing Rod for advanced anglers) and the patience to learn the waters.

🚀 Getting Started

  1. Obtain a Fishing Rod

Purchase a Fishing Rod from any General Store — it's the only mandatory equipment. Experienced anglers can upgrade to the Pro Fishing Rod, which adds a direction-pull mechanic and shifts catch odds toward rarer, more valuable fish.

  2. Equip Bait (Optional but Recommended)

Bait increases your chances of attracting fish and can reduce the difficulty of the skill check. Different baits target different species. See the Bait & Lures section below.

  3. Find a Body of Water

Head to any river, lake, pond, creek, or swamp. Each body of water has its own fish population — not every fish appears everywhere. Check the Fishing Locations section to find what you're after.

  4. Cast Your Line

Equip the rod and press LMB near water to cast. With a standard rod, tug with E to build interest and hook a fish. The Pro Rod skips this phase — a fish bites on its own after a short wait.

  5. Fight and Land the Fish

Once hooked, a multi-round skill check begins. Land enough hits to fill the progress bar to 100%. The Pro Rod adds a direction pull meter you must manage simultaneously — the fish tugs your line left, right, or forward while skill checks fire.

How It Works

Fishing uses a two-phase system: the Interest Phase (waiting for a bite) and the Fight Phase (reeling in the fish). The Pro Fishing Rod replaces the interest phase with a continuous direction-pull mechanic.

Time of Day

Many fish species are only active during certain hours of the in-game day. Some fish are nocturnal, others are dawn feeders, and a handful of common species bite around the clock. Pay attention to the time — it matters more than you think.

The tackle box grid on your HUD dynamically shows which species are currently available in your zone. Fish outside their active hours won't appear and cannot be hooked.

Active Hours on Fish Cards

Fish cards below display a 🕐 tag with their active window. Fish without a time tag are available 24/7.

Phase 1: Building Interest

After casting, you'll see two bars:

  • Interest (Blue Bar) — How attracted the fish is to your line. Reaches 100% and a fish bites.
  • Tension (Red Bar) — Stress on the line. If tension reaches 100%, the line snaps instantly.

Press E to tug the line — each tug builds both interest and tension. Using bait gives a bonus to interest per press, and using the right bait for the zone's fish gives an even bigger bonus. Both bars decay naturally over time, so you need to find the rhythm: tug enough to build interest, but not so aggressively that tension overwhelms you.

Grace Period

You have a few seconds of grace after casting before the boredom timer starts counting. Use this window to get your first tugs in without pressure.

Phase 2: The Fight (Skill Check)

Once a fish bites, a multi-round skill check begins. Each round presents a moving target you need to hit:

  • Great hits fill the progress bar significantly.
  • Good hits fill it moderately.
  • Miss drains the bar and increases difficulty — the speed and shake ramp up with consecutive misses.

Fill the progress bar to 100% and you land the fish. Accumulate too many total misses and the line breaks.

Line Breaks Are Final

If your line breaks, you lose the fish and any consumable bait you had equipped. You keep your rod and any reusable lures.

Pro Rod: Advanced Fishing

The Pro Fishing Rod is an upgraded rod that completely changes the fishing experience. It replaces the standard interest/tension minigame with a direction pull system that demands real-time mouse control alongside the skill check.

How the Pro Rod Differs

  • No Interest Phase — The fish bites automatically after a random wait (4–15 seconds). No E-mashing required.
  • Direction Pull System — During the fight, the fish pulls left, right, or forward. You counter by moving your mouse in the matching direction. A pull meter shows your position — stay in the correct zone or the fish drains progress and your line risks snapping.
  • Rarer Fish — Catch weights shift toward larger, more valuable species. Small fish are less likely; large and XL fish are significantly more common.
  • Tougher Skill Checks — Good hits give 65% of normal progress, greats give 75%, and misses hurt 50% more. Each miss also spikes tension and drains extra progress.
  • Passive Drain — Progress constantly drains while fighting. You must land skill check hits just to stay even. Drain speed scales with the fish’s value tier.
  • Tension Management — Pulling the wrong direction builds tension. At 100% tension, the line snaps. Pulling correctly slowly relieves it.
  • Better Rewards — Double loot table rolls on catch and bait loss chance is halved.
Pro Rod Direction Cues

The fish changes pull direction every 3–6 seconds with an audio tug cue. When it pulls left or right, move your mouse that direction to counter. When it pulls forward, a constant force pushes the bar to one side — fight to keep it centered. Watch the on-screen indicator and listen for the direction change sound.

🪱 Bait & Lures

Bait dramatically affects your fishing experience. The right bait for the right water can make an expert-tier fish catchable by an intermediate angler. Each bait has a skill bonus (reduces difficulty) and may target specific species.

Bait Matching Bonus

When a bait's target fish list includes species that actually live in your current water zone, you get an extra +10 interest per tug on top of the normal bait bonus. Always match your bait to the water for fastest hookups.

🐟 Fish Species

The frontier waters host a wide variety of fish across 4 difficulty tiers. What lives where, when they bite, and what they're worth — that's for you to discover. The more you fish, the more you'll learn.

📓
Fishing Journal

Pick up a Fishing Journal from any General Store to start tracking your discoveries. Every new species you catch at a new location gets logged — complete with an interactive map of the frontier's water bodies, species lore, personal records, and weight tracking. Fill out your journal to become a true master angler.

Difficulty Tiers

Fish are organized into four tiers based on their value and the fight they put up. Higher-tier fish are harder to land but pay significantly more.

TierFightValue RangeWhat to Expect
EasyShort, forgivingUnder $1Common panfish — quick bites, perfect for beginners
MediumModerate, faster checks$1 – $3Mid-weight species that require more rounds to land
HardDemanding, tighter windows$3 – $6Serious fish — misses punish harder and checks are fast
ExpertBrutal, 10-round gauntlet$6+Trophy monsters — premium bait recommended, bragging rights guaranteed

Some species are time-dependent — they only bite during certain hours of the in-game day. The tackle box grid on your fishing HUD dynamically shows what's currently available in your zone. Bait with a skill bonus can reduce the effective difficulty tier of a fight.

🗺 Fishing Locations

The frontier has over 25 unique water zones spread across lakes, rivers, swamps, creeks, and ponds. Each body of water has its own fish population — not every species appears everywhere. Part of becoming a master angler is learning which waters hold which fish.

📓
Use Your Fishing Journal

The Fishing Journal features an interactive map of every fishable body of water in the frontier. As you catch fish, your journal automatically maps which species you've found at each location. Explore new waters, discover new species, and fill out your journal to complete the map.

Water Types

Different water types tend to host different categories of fish. Understanding the environment helps you know what to expect — even before you've cast a line.

TypeCharacterWhat You'll Find
🌊 LakesDeep, still water — wide varietyThe widest species diversity. Some lakes hold trophy-class fish that don't appear anywhere else.
🏞 RiversCurrent-fed, diverseCurrent-dwelling species thrive here. Rivers often border multiple regions, offering varied catches along their length.
🐊 SwampsMurky, warm, low-visibilityBottom-feeders rule the swamp. Warm, murky conditions attract some of the biggest predators.
🪨 CreeksSmall, shallow, easy accessOnly smaller species — but bites are fast and skill checks are forgiving. Great for beginners.
🪷 PondsLimited, often near townsSmaller fish populations, but convenient. A few cold-water ponds hold surprises.
How Water Zones Work

The game detects which water zone you're standing in automatically. When you cast your line, you can only catch fish that belong to that specific zone. Your fishing HUD's tackle box grid shows which species are currently available and in-season at your location.

🎯 The Fight (Skill Check)

Understanding the skill check system is the difference between landing trophy fish and losing your bait. Here's how each tier scales:

Tier Speed Rounds Great % Good Fill Great Fill Miss Penalty Max Fails
Easy 3 3 30% +28% +38% −12% 4
Medium 3 5 25% +18% +26% −8% 4
Hard 4 7 20% +13% +20% −6% 4
Expert 5 10 15% +9% +15% −5% 4
Consecutive Misses Escalate

Each consecutive miss increases the speed by +1. Three misses in a row on an Expert fish means the indicator hits maximum speed — at that point you need a Great hit just to slow things back down.

Bait Reduces Difficulty

A bait's skill bonus directly reduces the effective difficulty tier. Using Crawdad Bait (+2) on a Channel Catfish (Expert) reduces it to a Medium-tier fight. This is why premium bait is essential for trophy fishing.

💡 Tips & Tricks

  • Match your bait to the location. If your bait targets species that live in your current water, you get a bonus to interest per tug. Experiment to find what works where.
  • Don't spam E during the interest phase. Tension builds faster than it decays. Develop a rhythm — tug, pause, tug. Keep tension under 60% at all times.
  • Start at creeks. New to fishing? Creeks only have easy panfish. Perfect for learning the skill check timing before tackling harder waters.
  • Save your premium bait for deeper waters. Using Crawdad or the Legendary Lure at a creek is a waste — save them for lakes and rivers where the big fish live.
  • Multiple casts are free. If you lose a non-consumable lure, you keep it. Reusable lures like the Spinner and Legendary Lure persist through line breaks.
  • Fish sell at any General Store or Butcher. You don't need to find a specific vendor — sell wherever is closest.
  • Get a Fishing Journal. It tracks every species you catch at every water body, building out a complete discovery map of the frontier. Essential for serious anglers.
  • Consecutive misses are the real killer. If you miss twice in a row, pause your timing and recalibrate. The speed ramp from consecutive misses is brutal.
  • Pay attention to the time of day. Many valuable fish only bite during certain hours. Fishing at the wrong time means you'll never see them. Experiment with dawn, dusk, and nighttime sessions.
  • Pro Rod: listen for the tug. The direction-change audio cue tells you when to switch. React quickly — pulling the wrong way even briefly spikes tension and drains progress.
  • Pro Rod: don't panic on forward pulls. When the fish pulls forward, a steady force pushes you to one side. Just counteract it with your mouse — same intensity as left/right pulls.

💵 Earnings Guide

Fishing income scales dramatically with skill, bait, and the waters you choose. Beginners catching panfish at creeks will earn modest pocket money, while experienced anglers who know where the trophy fish lurk can make fishing one of the most lucrative civilian jobs in Rosewood Ridge.

💰
Earning Potential

The gap between easy and expert fish is massive — trophy species sell for 10–25x what a common panfish brings. Invest in premium bait, learn the best waters, and fish at the right time of day to maximize your haul. The biggest paydays go to anglers who've put in the time to discover where the monsters live.
