The great ranching families of the American West were built on land, livestock, and hard labour. In Rosewood Ridge, the rancher's life is exactly that — a business built from the ground up, trading in animals and the goods they produce.
Overview
Ranching is a licensed, RP-driven occupation focused on managing and commercialising livestock — primarily horses and cattle. It operates at the intersection of land management, animal trade, and the broader frontier economy. A rancher supplies horse trainers with breeding stock, butchers with beef, and the general market with hides and other animal goods.
It's one of the most character-driven roles on the server — largely player-driven within the systems available, requiring strong business sense and active presence to maintain a profitable operation.
Ranching doesn't exist in isolation. Your income depends on maintaining buyers (butchers, horse trainers, shop owners) and suppliers (feed from farmers, tools from gunsmiths and wheelwrights). The rancher who invests in community relationships thrives; the isolated operator struggles.
Getting Started

Establish your character's ranching background
A credible rancher character has a history — family land, time working on someone else's ranch, or a determined newcomer with savings and ambitions. Develop this backstory before registering.

Register your operation
Apply for a ranching license through the appropriate server channels. You'll need a proposed name, a territory you intend to operate in, and a general business concept.

Acquire starting stock
Your first animals are your founding investment. Purchase from other players or through the market. Starting with quality breeding stock is better than starting with volume.
Livestock Management
Active ranching involves regular IC interaction with your animal assets:
- Feeding schedules — maintained through RP and occasional system interactions. Healthy animals produce better goods and retain value for sale.
- Pasture management — use your licensed land area. Overcrowding or abandoning animals has IC consequences for your reputation as a rancher.
- Record keeping — the best ranchers keep informal IC logs of their herd composition, sale prices, and breeding records. It deepens the RP and provides a paper trail for disputes.
Other players can and will steal animals if given the opportunity. Unsecured livestock is a liability. Maintain your property IC and report theft through proper law enforcement channels — it creates compelling RP and protects your investment.
Horse Breeding & Sales
Horse trade is among the most valuable revenue streams for a rancher. Working in partnership with a licensed Horse Trainer creates a powerful business pairing:
- The rancher sources, houses, and pre-conditions horses for sale.
- The horse trainer applies formal training — registered stat improvements in health, stamina, speed, and handling — that increase the horse's sale price.
- Together, they sell trained, high-quality horses to the market at premium prices, splitting the revenue.
A well-bred horse with documented training history can fetch several times the price of an untrained animal. The rancher/trainer partnership is one of the most profitable businesses on the server — provided both parties maintain quality and availability.
Ranch Products
Beyond live animal sales, a ranch produces secondary goods that feed into other trades:

Key Relationships
- Horse Trainer — Primary business partner. Coordinate breeding goals and training schedules.
- Farmer — Source of feed grain. A reliable farmer supply contract keeps your livestock healthy and reduces operating costs.
- Butcher — The end buyer for cattle not kept for breeding. Negotiate standing purchase agreements.
- Lawman — Crucial relationship. Rustlers and thieves are a constant threat; knowing your local deputies means faster response when something goes wrong.
Tips for Success
- Start small. A rancher with two well-cared-for horses and a handful of cattle is more sustainable than one who overextends and can't maintain their herd.
- Name your animals IC. It sounds minor, but a named horse or prize bull builds character depth and creates memorable interactions when you sell or lose them.
- Document everything in-character. Price lists, herd rosters, buyer agreements — the paperwork makes you look professional and prevents misunderstandings.
- Get involved in server events. Ranching creates natural hooks for cattle drives, horse races, and territorial disputes — prime RP material.
