Shop Owner

Every frontier town is anchored by its merchants — the general store, the saloon, the tailor, the pawn dealer. A licensed shop in Rosewood Ridge is more than a points exchange; it's the heart of the community.

📖 Overview

Running a player-owned shop is one of the most community-facing roles in Rosewood Ridge. You're not just selling goods — you're creating a location where players gather, where commerce happens, and where relationships are built. A well-run shop becomes a landmark of your town.

Shop ownership operates through the SynShop business license system, which grants you access to a persistent player-run storefront with custom stock, pricing, and operating hours.

More Than a Cash Register

The best shop owners build a persona around their business. A gruff general store owner who's been in Valentine for thirty years is more compelling than a nameless merchant window. Let the shop define your character as much as your character defines the shop.

📋 Opening Your Shop

  1. Choose your concept and location

Decide what type of shop you want to run and where. Each town has different foot traffic patterns and player needs — a saloon serves Valentine's rowdy cowboys, a general store might be better anchored in slower Armadillo or Strawberry.

  2. Apply for a business license

Submit your business application through the in-character commerce system or Discord channels. Your application should include the business type, proposed location, a concept description, and your character's reason for setting up shop.

  3. Secure your premises

Work with the Realtor/Banker to formalise your premises arrangement — rental or purchase. A physical location is required before your SynShop can be activated at that address.

  4. Stock your shelves and open

Once your license is approved and shop is set up, source your initial stock from farmers, hunters, miners, or the general market — then open your doors.

📦 Stocking Your Shelves

Your shop's inventory is sourced from two overlapping channels:

Player Supplier Agreements

The most economically active option — buy directly from hunters, farmers, miners, and lumberjacks at negotiated bulk rates, and sell at retail markup. This creates a closed loop that supports the entire player economy.

Market Stocking

Supplement player-sourced goods with market-purchased items for reliable availability. This costs more per unit but guarantees supply even when your player suppliers are inactive.

Negotiate Standing Supply Agreements

Approach active farmers, hunters, and miners with an offer: a guaranteed purchase price for their stock, paid immediately upon delivery. They get reliable income; you get reliable supply. Both parties benefit from the formalised relationship.

Running the Shop

  • Post clear opening hours in Discord and IC on your shop's signage. Players won't visit a shop if they don't know when it's open.
  • Set competitive but fair pricing — checking what other shops charge for similar items is good business practice.
  • Offer services beyond the basic counter sale: place orders for out-of-stock items, offer bulk discounts for large purchases, run limited-time specials.
  • Create atmosphere. A saloon with an owner who welcomes patrons by name and remembers their usual order is a favourite gathering spot; a silent cash-exchange isn't.
💰
Host Shop Events

Organise IC events at your shop — a weekly poker night at the saloon, a trade fair at the general store, a clearance sale. Events drive traffic, generate RP, and build your reputation as a place worth visiting.

🔗 Supply Chain

The shop owner sits at the end of the server's economic supply chain. Understanding where your goods come from helps you price them fairly and maintain stock:

  • Hunters → Butcher products, hides, furs
  • Farmers → Produce, grain, preserved food
  • Miners → Raw materials, refined metals (for tools)
  • Lumberjacks → Fuel wood, structural goods
  • Brewers / Distillers → Liqueur for your saloon (via contract job supply chain)

💡 Tips for Shop Owners

  • Maintain presence. A shop that's only open occasionally doesn't build regulars — consistency matters more than marathon sessions.
  • Get to know your customers IC. Regular buyers become characters in your story; they'll bring friends and create their own RP hooks at your establishment.
  • Work with the Banker — business loans and financial partnerships can help you expand stock range without depleting personal funds.
  • Inform the Lawman of your operating hours. Shops can be targets for robbery, and a relationship with law enforcement is a practical business measure, not just good RP.
  • Don't undercut the entire market just to move stock. A thriving economy with fair margins is better for everyone — including you — than a race to the bottom on prices.
